The right colours, the right shapes, what’s flattering, what’s fashionable and what we’re supposedly meant to wear.
There’s certainly no shortage of advice telling us what we should and shouldn’t wear.
But somewhere amongst all those opinions, have we lost sight of something rather important?
Do I actually like it? And do I feel good wearing it?
Because surely that matters too?
When Did It All Become So Complicated?
We’re constantly surrounded by fashion trends, styling advice and social media opinions.
One minute skinny jeans are out, the next they’re back in fashion. Then there are the lists of things we should apparently stop wearing once we reach a certain age.
But who says?
We’re all different. We have different lifestyles, body shapes, colouring, personalities and preferences.
What looks fabulous on one person might not work for another. And that’s why I don’t believe in a one-size-fits-all approach to personal style.
Understanding What Works for You
Having worked with colour and personal style for over 20 years, I’ve seen just how powerful that knowledge can be.
Understanding which colours complement your natural colouring, which shapes and proportions work for your body and which styles reflect your personality can make an enormous difference.
Imagine walking into a shop and recognising which clothes are worth trying on, rather than taking armfuls into the changing room and hoping something works.
Or opening your wardrobe and knowing which pieces work well together, rather than wondering what on earth to wear.
That’s the real value of understanding your colours and personal style. It’s not simply about knowing what suits you, but knowing how to use that knowledge.
But What About the Rules?
Let’s say you absolutely love wearing brown, but during your colour analysis you discover it’s not one of your most flattering colours.
Does that mean you should never wear brown again?
Of course not!
What you now understand is why that particular shade doesn’t work quite so well and the difference a more flattering colour can make.
If you’re choosing an outfit for a job interview, that brown dress might not be your strongest choice. But if you love it and you’re heading out with the girls, why wouldn’t you wear it?
Would I encourage you to buy lots more clothes in colours that don’t particularly complement you? Probably not, especially when investing in something like a coat.
But there’s no reason to rush home and throw out half your wardrobe either!
Some people happily continue wearing existing pieces until they’re ready to replace them. Others find that once they’ve seen the difference, they simply can’t unsee it.
And of course, not everyone has the budget to replace their clothes straight away.
It’s about understanding what works, why it works and making informed choices that feel right for you.
Personal Style Should Feel Personal
One of the things I love most about my work is helping women discover and develop their own signature style.
Not somebody else’s idea of how they should look, but a style that reflects who they are, works for their lifestyle and makes getting dressed easier.
Our lifestyles, bodies and preferences change over time, so naturally our personal style may evolve too.
Understanding your colours, shapes and styles gives you a foundation to work from, while still leaving plenty of room to express yourself.
You can follow a trend because you love it or completely ignore it because it doesn’t appeal to you.
Knowing what works for you should give you more choice, not less.
Getting Dressed Should Be Something We Enjoy
I think we sometimes put far too much pressure on ourselves to get things right.
But getting dressed shouldn’t feel like another thing we have to get right. It should be something we enjoy.
So, by all means, consider the colours, shapes and styles that work for you.
But don’t forget to ask yourself:
Do I actually like it? And do I feel good wearing it?
Because understanding your personal style should give you the knowledge and confidence to make choices that work for you.
And that’s very much at the heart of how I work with my clients.
