Does Your Wardrobe Reflect Who You Are Now?

Life changes.

Sometimes gradually, sometimes all at once.

Our routines change, our priorities shift, our bodies change, our work changes, children grow up, relationships change and the way we spend our time can look completely different from how it did a few years ago.

But our wardrobes don’t always change with us.

It’s very easy to keep wearing (and buying) the same kinds of clothes simply because they’re familiar. We get used to seeing ourselves in a certain way, even when that way no longer quite fits the life we’re living now.

You might still have lots of clothes from a previous job, even though your day-to-day life is now much more casual.

You might have pieces that suited your body a few years ago but don’t feel quite right anymore.

Or you might have clothes that technically still fit, but somehow no longer feel like you.

And that’s the important bit.

Your wardrobe isn’t just about having enough clothes. It should support your lifestyle, reflect your personality and help you feel comfortable and confident in the person you are now.

How do you want your clothes to make you feel?

This is often a really useful place to start.

Think about the outfits you feel best in.

Do they make you feel:

  • confident?
  • relaxed?
  • polished?
  • feminine?
  • creative?
  • current?
  • elegant?
  • effortless?
  • vibrant?
  • capable?
  • put-together?
  • more like yourself?

There’s no right answer.

The key is recognising the feelings you want your clothes to create for you.

If you want to feel polished but your wardrobe feels scruffy and mismatched, that tells you something.

If you want to feel relaxed and comfortable but everything feels too formal or restrictive, that tells you something too.

And if you want to feel more visible, more colourful or more expressive, but your wardrobe is full of clothes that help you disappear into the background, there may be a disconnect between who you are and what your clothes are saying.

How do you actually spend your time?

This is another really important question.

Think about a typical week.

How much of your time is spent working, at home, socialising, exercising, travelling, going to meetings, attending events or simply running around doing everyday life?

Then look at your wardrobe.

Does it reflect that?

If most of your life is now fairly casual but most of your wardrobe is made up of smart workwear, there’s an obvious mismatch.

Equally, if you regularly go out, attend events or meet clients but never seem to have anything you feel good in for those occasions, that’s a gap worth noticing.

Your wardrobe should work for the life you actually live — not the life you used to live, or the one you think you ought to be living.

Does it still feel like you?

Perhaps the question isn’t simply:

“Do I still like this?”

Perhaps it’s:

“Does this still reflect me?”

Think about the clothes you reach for most often.

How do they make you feel?

Do they suit the way you actually spend your time?

Do they feel current and relevant to your life now?

Or are you holding on to things because they belonged to a version of you that has moved on?

That doesn’t mean you need to throw everything out and start again.

Far from it.

Sometimes all that’s needed is a little perspective.

You might rediscover pieces you’d forgotten about, find new ways to wear what you already own, identify a few genuine gaps, or realise that some clothes are simply taking up space without serving you anymore.

The aim isn’t to create a “perfect” wardrobe.

It’s to create one that feels like yours.

One that works for your lifestyle, your body, your personality and the season of life you’re in now.

Because when your wardrobe reflects who you are, getting dressed becomes easier.

And far more enjoyable.

If your wardrobe no longer feels like you, or you’re not sure how to make it work for the life you’re living now, a wardrobe review or personal styling session can help you make sense of what you already own, identify what’s missing and create a wardrobe that feels much more like you.
