Staying Stylish This Winter

Staying stylish and feeling your best during the winter months can be a bit more tricky particularly with wearing heavier layers and long gloomy days which feel like they’re dragging on forever.  That said just because it’s cold and miserable outside doesn’t mean we have to resign ourselves to giving up on style and hibernating until the spring.  It’s just means we need to think a bit more creatively when getting dressed in the morning.  Here are a few of my top tips and tricks for dressing when it’s cold outside.

Layer like a pro

Learning to layer up is a massively practical way to dress during the winter months.  Don’t be afraid to pile on the layer’s and don’t worry about them ruining your look. A good base layer (silk underwear, a merino wool thermal top or fleece lined tights is a great place to start.  Then find items you can layer under trendier pieces so you can stay warm but still look good. Polo necks under jumpers, shirts and dresses work a treat as does adding an ultra thin lightweight puffer which can be paired over sweaters and under coats to add an extra layer of warmth.

Have fun with texture

Experiment and have fun with mixing different textures together in your outfits.  Adding ribbed jumpers, leather skirts and trousers, cable knit cardigans, quilted puffer jackets and faux fur coats are all great ways to incorporate texture into your look.

Choose tight fitting over loose fitting clothes

This doesn’t mean everything you wear has to be tight fitting – it could be a thermal underlayer or ribbed polo neck. Swapping out your wide leg jeans for skinny jeans or cords works a treat as will wearing fleece lined tights or leggings to keep your legs warm when wearing skirts and dresses.

Invest in good pair of boots

Good footwear can elevate even the simplest of outfits.  Combat boots are great for running around and perfect for pairing with both feminine looks (dresses and skirts teamed with chunky knits) or your favourite jeans and hoodie. Next up are knee high boots – from comfortable flats to high heels there are so many great options and are easy to pair with your favourite skinny jeans or fleece lined leggings.  Not only that, they look fab teamed with any length of coat and are great at stopping a bitter winder from seeping through your jeans.

If knee high boots are not your thing have a pair of killer boots the world deserves to see. And if like me you spend quite a bit of time outside walking (or standing pitch side while your kids run around in the mud) a robust pair of waterproof hiking/yard boots are a must.

Dress up your look with hats, gloves and scarves

If you stick to the same one or two coats over the winter switch things up with a variety of different, hats, gloves and scarves. A cashmere beanie and a scarf in one of your best colours is a quick and easy way to inject some life into your look.

What’s your favourite winter look?
